PSTN switch-off readiness
List every phone line and number your business pays for — check old bills, not memory
Identify non-phone devices on lines: alarms, lifts, door entry, telecare, card machines, fax
Check contract end dates — don't renew an analogue service in 2026
Confirm broadband at each site can carry voice (or plan a 4G/5G backup)
Book migration for H1 2026 — engineer availability collapses near the deadline
Keep numbers: request porting as part of migration, never cancel the old line first

Switching phone provider
Map how calls should flow: who answers what, when, and where overflow goes
Count users honestly — including part-timers, hot desks and the warehouse phone
Ask for the porting plan in writing: dates, parallel running, rollback
Check the SLA covers response time, not just uptime — and who you actually call
Confirm exit terms before entry: notice period, number release, data export
Schedule go-live midweek, mid-morning — never Friday afternoon

Buying IoT SIMs
Measure real data use per device for a month before choosing a plan
Insist on unsteered multi-network — steered SIMs favour the operator, not you
Test SIMs in the actual device, in the actual location, before bulk ordering
Check the dashboard and API before signing — you'll live in them for years
Set data caps and alerts on day one, not after the first surprise bill
Ask about IMEI locking and private APN if devices live in public places

Opening a new site
Order connectivity the day you sign the lease — it's always the long pole
Use a 4G/5G router for day one; let fixed broadband catch up later
Get a local number for the area plus your central number routing there
Ship handsets pre-provisioned — plugging in should be the whole install
Add the site to central call flows, wallboards and the company directory
Test failover before opening day, not during the first outage
